Privacy Policy
Last updated
This policy explains what personal data afterryan collects, why we collect it and what choices you have. It applies to this website.
What we collect
Messages you send us
If you use the contact form, we receive the name, email address, company or website (optional) and message you enter. We use them only to reply to you.
Accounts
If you create an account, we store your name, username, email address and a hashed version of your password. We never store your password in plain text. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address from Google.
Visit statistics
We run our own basic analytics. For each page view it records the page address and title, the site you came from, your device type, browser and operating system, and a hashed version of your IP address that cannot be turned back into the address. It also uses two first-party cookies to recognise a returning visitor and a single visit. We use this to see which pages are read, not to identify you. If we switch on a third-party analytics tool such as Google Analytics or Microsoft Clarity, that service handles data under its own policy.
Ads and sponsored posts
We show ads and sponsored posts. To report to advertisers, we record that an ad was shown or clicked, the page it was on and your device type. Ad measurement does not use cookies. It uses a hash of your IP address and browser details that changes every day and cannot be reversed to identify you.
Cookies and browser storage
- dl_vid (analytics, up to 400 days): a random ID that recognises a returning visitor.
- dl_vses (analytics, 30 minutes after your last page view): a random ID for a single visit.
- Session cookie (only if you sign in): keeps you signed in.
- dl_unlocked (7 days): remembers a password you entered to open a protected post.
- Theme setting (stored in your browser): remembers light or dark mode.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site still works, but signing in and protected posts will not.
How we use data
- To reply to your messages.
- To run accounts and sign-in.
- To understand which content is read and improve it.
- To measure ads for advertisers.
- To keep the site secure and stop abuse.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We use service providers to run the site, such as hosting, database, file storage and email delivery, and they process data on our behalf. We may disclose data if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep data for as long as we need it for the purposes above, then delete or anonymise it. You can ask us to delete your messages or your account at any time.
Your choices
You can ask us to show you the personal data we hold about you, correct it or delete it. Email [email protected] and we will respond.
Children
The site is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. The date at the top of the page shows when it last changed.
